Impact-driven from the start
Tempeh today was founded to make affordable plant-based food in India a reality: nutritious, scalable and impactful. Our core solution? A decentralised, India-specific model for fermented plant protein production that delivers quality tempeh at scale, while creating local opportunities.
“Working together for a sustainable future through affordable plant-based food.”
– Henk Schouten, Founder

From Dutch innovation to Indian transformation
Henk Schouten, a pioneer in plant-based protein in Europe and founder of Schouten Europe, saw that India needed a different approach. The result:
- Tempeh based on non-GMO soybeans, adapted to Indian production realities
- No cold chain required, shelf-stable formats
- 100% vegetarian, gut-friendly and low in fat and carbs
- Certified by FSSC, meeting global QA standards
- Proud to be a FSSC-certified tempeh supplier in India
- Local strength: Women-led micro units (MFUs)
Tempeh today operates through a hybrid model:
- Central factories in Bangalore & Pune
- Decentralised MFUs: small-scale fermentation hubs run by women, close to local demand
- This structure supports decentralised food production in India, boosting job creation, food access and social inclusion.

Built for impact, driven by collaboration
Tempeh today is combining Dutch know-how with grassroots partnerships across India. We collaborate with industrial partners, CSR programs, and B2B food brands to provide:
- Scalable tempeh production for Indian and global markets
- Clean-label, consistent plant-based protein in India
- B2B collaboration for plant-based food with measurable impact
